MELASMA & PIGMENTATION PEEL PROGRAM

Melasma and pigmentation are related skin conditions characterized by the appearance of dark patches or spots on the skin.

Melasma refers to a specific type of hyperpigmentation that appears as symmetrical patches of brown or gray-brown discoloration on the face, particularly on the cheeks, forehead, nose, and upper lip. It is more common in women, especially those with darker skin tones, and often occurs during pregnancy or with hormonal changes (such as contraceptive use). The overproduction of melanin triggers melasma, the pigment responsible for skin colour, and is typically worsened by sun exposure.

Hyperpigmentation is a broader term encompassing various types of skin darkening or discoloration. It can occur due to several factors, including sun damage, hormonal changes, acne scarring, inflammation, and skin injuries. Unlike melasma, hyperpigmentation can affect different areas of the body, not just the face.

Both melasma and hyperpigmentation can be influenced by similar factors, such as sun exposure and hormonal changes, and may require similar treatment approaches.

FAQs

  • Chemical peels exfoliate the top layers of skin, helping to reduce the appearance of dark spots and uneven skin tone caused by melasma and hyperpigmentation.

  • The number of sessions varies depending on the severity of the pigmentation and the type of peel used, but a series of peels is often recommended for best results.

  • These peels often contain ingredients like glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid, or hydroquinone. We use the MELINE brand for our program.

  • Downtime varies with the intensity of the peel. Lighter peels may have minimal downtime, while deeper peels may require a few days for skin recovery.

Common side effects include redness, peeling, and mild irritation, but these typically subside within a few days.

  • While they can improve existing pigmentation, ongoing sun protection and maintenance treatments are crucial to prevent recurrence.
